DIRECTOR’S NOTES
M-1 is a sort of farewell to Sarajevo after living there the past three years, although at many moments it felt that this farewell would come more in the shape of getting completely wasted rather than making a film. Being in a foreign country is too complex to try and make sense of it, it’s difficult enough in our own countries. It’s even more difficult to try and do it through a film, and even more to make a “statement”. So the only real thing that one can grasp is people and experiences. That was the starting point for us, the two things we were left with after three years.
There’s a certain common ground in those night places (which are the night places of anywhere) that is very concrete: alcohol, music and drugs. In this common ground, where communication seems broken or impossible, there are glimpses of connections between human beings. They can be hidden, subtle, or briefly strident, but they exist.
